Mr Sugden is a Plastic Surgeon working in both The NHS and independent sector. His NHS practice is based at The University Hospital of North Durham, Shotley Bridge and Chester le Street and includes skin, breast, abdominal, hand and general reconstructive surgery. He offers private treatment at the Woodlands, Darlington and Spire, Washington for many cosmetic, skin hand and functional procedures as well as some NHS treatments via the “choose and book” system.
Whilst studying Medicine at Manchester Medical School he took an extra degree in Pathological Sciences. During this extra study he undertook a research project in Dupuytren’s Disease publishing in a peer review journal and presenting at a National Conference. After graduating he undertook Basic Surgical Training in the North West. He then undertook specialised training in Plastic Surgery in Preston, Shotley Bridge, Leicester, Chelmsford, Middlesbrough and Newcastle. In addition he undertook further subspecialty training in Hand Surgery in Nottingham as part of the TIG (Training Interface Group) programme.
He then took an NHS Consultant post at The University Hospital of North Durham where his NHS practice continues. He has contributed to the development of the Department including helping setting up an innovative rapid access skin cancer service, increased local anaesthetic provision to reduce waiting times for cancer surgery and developing Hand Therapy skills to improve the patient journey for hand treatments. He continues to help teach junior doctors on a daily basis as well as helping teach on specialised sessions at Newcastle for postgraduates.
Additionally he teaches on courses run by the Primary Care Dermatology Society to help Primary Care clinicians develop more specialised skin surgery techniques.
